Final Music In The Garden Event Friday Sept. 13

Boxerwood will be hosting its final edition of "Music In The Garden" this Friday at the Meadow Stage.  This free event will feature the Coprolite Band which is made up of a group of "Jurassic Rocking" VMI professors.  They play a lot of older rock music that is just fun to dance to.

The fun begins around 5:30pm and ends before 8pm.  So bring a packed dinner and a blanket or chairs to join us for one last blast of summer.

Fall Family Festival On September 21

Get Down ‘n Dirty at Boxerwood’s Fall Family Festival on September 21

Celebrate the turning of the seasons next Saturday afternoon, September 21, at Boxerwood’s 14^th annual Fall Family Festival from 1-5. The nature center will host a variety of fun, educational activities, including an archaeology field station and a ukulele jam on the meadow stage.

Washington and Lee Archaeology Program will set up an outdoor lab where kids can dig and sift soil to recover genuine artifacts from a local dig site, then wash and identify them. The material comes from a midden, or trash pile, from the 1800’s discovered behind the old Robinson Hall dormitory during recent construction.

Other hands-dirty activities include a watershed mini-quest, traversing Boxerwood in search of clues to where water has been and what it has done; digging in a Worm World; and making clay pinch pots and beads.  Festival activities will also include traditional favorites, like pressing apples and weaving honeysuckle head-wreaths.

At 3pm, members of the RCHS Ukulele Club will perform on the meadow stage. Children and adults who play the ukulele are invited to bring theirs and join the club for a jam session.

For festival-goers who work up an appetite, fresh cider and donuts will be available for purchase throughout the day and members of the Lexington Moms Club are baking desserts to help support Boxerwood’s environmental education programs. The SPCA will also be on site, bringing pets in need of families to adopt them.

Admission to the Fall Family Festival is free for Boxerwood members and $5 per carload for non-members (refunded for families that join Boxerwood the day of the festival). All activities and the ukulele performance are free.  Entrance fees will help cover festival costs; any extra proceeds will go to support Boxerwood’s education programs for the local schools and upkeep of the garden.

Music In The Garden August 9th

More “Music in the Garden” at Boxerwood

RW & Friends, an acoustic rock group hailing from Montebello – “the other side of the mountain” – will perform  Friday evening, August 9 at Boxerwood on the meadow stage. The free outdoor concert is the third of four “Music in the Garden” events sponsored by the nature center.  The band will play from 6:30 pm until dusk (about 8pm). In the event of rain, the concert will move into the lodge.

Music-goers are invited to arrive early to picnic and socialize before the concert begins. Folks should bring their own food, drinks, chairs and blankets.  

RW & Friends includes Richard Smith on guitar, bass and vocals, Joe Dinardo on bass, guitar and vocals, and Sherrie Smith on vocals, joined by Steve Parent on mandolin, guitar and vocals. The band plays acoustic rock from the 60’s and 70’s.

A final concert on Friday, September 13 will feature The Coprolite Band, a group of VMI professors who play electric “Jurassic Rock” from the 70’s through the 90’s.

Admission to each of the concerts is free, with hat-passing for voluntary contributions to support Boxerwood. All the bands that have and will play Music in the Garden have generously donated their performances.

In addition to the music, there will be a variety of “KIDSTOCK” activities, including games, slip ‘n slide, face painting, beading bubble wands, spin art, and psychedelic painting.

Food and drinks will be available to purchase all day, including craft beer, wine, hard cider, iced tea, soft drinks, BBQ sandwiches, burgers (veggie and beef), hotdogs, ice cream, and watermelon. No coolers are permitted, but do bring chairs, picnic blankets and sunscreen. Friendly dogs are welcome but must be on leashes.

Admission to the festival is $10 for adults and teens (age 16 and older) and $5 for kids age 5-15. Kids under age 5 are free.  Proceeds go to support Boxerwood’s environmental education programs for the local schools and upkeep of the woodland garden.

Azurat Music to Benefit Boxerwood July 6th

Music starts at noon. Rain or shine. Dress for comfort ... hot by day, cool at night.
No cost to attend, however a minimum contribution is suggested for Boxerwood!

Our two stages are back dropped by mountains in a gorgeous Blue Ridge hollow with fantastic natural acoustics. There’s 53 mountain acres with lots of great places to hike and camp. If you decide to camp, bring your own gear.. No camper-trailers on our property; however there are campgrounds near by. Or we can send you a list of the local B & B’s and hotel/motels. NO PETS. Bring lawn chairs, picnic blankets and sun protection. BYO whatever libations & day-foods you enjoy (we’ll provide water, lemonade & snowcone making by day, coffee by night). Dinner is potluck at 7pm-ish and EVERYONE is asked to bring something to share. After dark we will set the bonfires, light sparklers, eat Smores and rock on into the night. On Sunday morning the music organically begins as those who stay over night as some feel moved to jam (or not). We'll perk the coffee, stoke the campfire and set out a light breakfast (it's on us!) for any who camp over. The festivities come to a close around 1:00 PM on Sunday.

BoxerWoodstock July 13th

Do not forget that our Fourth Annual BoxerWoodstock Festival will be held at Boxerwood on July 13th.  There will be great music, food, drink, and lots of fun for the whole family.

Music will start at 2pm and go until 9pm and features six different solo artists and bands.
Admission to this year’s festival is $5 for children ages 5-15 and $10 for older teens and adults. 

There will also be dancing, food, and family activities.

Don DePoy and Martha Hills will lead off the festival with a 20-minute set, then segue into the children's ukulele workshop; performance to follow. (Preregistration required - and children must be accompanied by an adult - call us) Kazoos will be available to children who are not in the ukulele workshop.

New Face At Boxerwood

Clara Williams, who has worked at Boxerwood since 2009, has left us to pursue a career in non-profit work and art.  She is already sorely missed and will be remembered in the community for her cheerful smile, work in the garden, and willingness to help others.

Boxerwood has been most fortunate to once again find an outstanding individual to join our family to help keep our educational programs and woodland garden growing.  Ben Eland has joined the Boxerwood Staff as our new Garden Worker.  Ben has volunteered for several years  in the Boxerwood education curriculum helping with formal school sessions during the day and after school programs through our partners at the Rockbridge Y.

Ben has decided to increase his involvement with Boxerwood by offering his environmental ethic, knowledge, and skills to keep us on track to meeting our Mission of influencing positive stewards of the Earth.  His past experience in operating construction equipment has already shown him to be our best tractor operator following an orientation with Clara.  He also has a background in carpentry and landscaping that will be of great benefit to our facilities and grounds.

Ben will also continue to support the Boxerwood Education Programming by assisting with teaching one day a week.
